The NBC television program Heroes, created by Tim Kring of Crossing Jordan fame, took America by storm with its realistic portrayal of what the world would be like if super heroes really did walk the earth.
The show went from just a show that promised a good story to cultural phenomenon after the pilot episode was aired on September 25, 2006. People were talking the very next day about the new show that they had seen and that it was different from what was already being considered for cancellation by NBC. People found themselves sympathizing with the complex characters that all seemed to be connected by more than merely powers and situations.
A hero had proved it as commercially viable, and was simultaneously critically acclaimed. The show had received praise for its constant use of well written plot twists, compelling character journeys, and an intelligently written world at risk plot.
The show was known for a unique writing team that played by no rules as far as story went and kept in contact with fans through a fansite and various websites where they would answer viewers questions (but only to an extent). With the show’s reputation secured, and with several award nominations, a second season was a sure thing.
And a sure thing it was. The second season picked up right where the last had left off, offering viewers new mysteries, new characters, and new stars alongside the first season veterans. The new season was just as talked about as the first, and things were going very smoothly for the new season. That is, until November 5th, 2007.
That was the day that the Writer’s Guild of America went on official strike after weeks of speculation. The strike, initiated by writers demanding royalties from DVD sales and internet profits, threatened the future of many television programs, and the National Broadcasting Company was, perhaps, hit the hardest. The Strike caused almost immediate shut-down of the new show Bionic Woman and had even put a stop to long time NBC staple Saturday Night Live.
And unfortunately, super powers were incapable of stopping the strike from affecting Heroes. The strike lasted long enough to cause the ratings powerhouse to cut its season short by a half season’s worth of episodes, leading the studio to re-shoot the ending of the episode Powerless.
However, this does not spell the end of Heroes. The creator and cast has promised a brand new season as soon as the strike is over, and many are speculating that the hiatus will help make the shows next season a vast improvement.

In the world of television programming options, cable and satellite TV services are the primary contenders. Despite the varied programming, affordability, and the unparalleled volume of HD broadcasts offered by satellite TV, millions of consumers continue to select cable television services based upon the convenience it offers by bundling television programming and internet access into a single bill. In the hectic day to day of the average person’s life, the ability to consolidate services is a welcomed step in the direction of simplifying some of the more mundane tasks such as tracking and paying bills.

However, developments in the world of satellite TV providers such as Dish Network in the past year have begun to erase the distinction between the bundled services of cable providers and satellite TV.

In 2006, Dish Network rolled out a program that paired the satellite TV provider with the high speed internet services of Wild Blue. This new program allowed Dish customers the option of receiving a single bill for both their satellite TV programming and their high speed internet access.

Obtaining internet access for current Dish customers is as simple as having a dish antenna and satellite modem installed. Installation is free but a one time fee is charged for the equipment lease which also covers any future equipment upgrades. This new service through the satellite TV provider should prove to be particularly attractive to users in rural areas who currently have fewer options in obtaining high speed access and more often rely on slower dial up services.

The WildBlue powered internet services offers SPAM and virus filtering, 24/7 technical support, and at least 5 e-mail addresses with a minimum of 10MB storage. In addition, spyware and anti-virus protection is offered at no charge for the first 18 months of service.

With the recent WildBlue and Dish Network pairing, consumers now have more options while getting the convenience they need. As satellite TV providers continue to increase accessibility, expand programming, and now begin to bundle services, their ability to compete and even outperform the older and more traditional cable providers continues to grow.

To receive television programming, you’ll need a subscription, a dish, and a receiver also called an IRD or a tuner. There are a few different types of receivers, and you choice or option depends on two things. Firstly, if you want to watch shows in high-definition medium remember to choose a receiver capable of pulling in High Definition programming. You’ll also need an HD-capable dish and a subscription to high-def programming.

Secondly, if a lot of recording is to be done, think about getting a receiver with a built-in DVR. Today’s DVRs are capable of recording hundreds of hours of your favorite programs. There are added benefits of a DVR, such as the ability to pause and rewind live TV. Most receivers offer both HD and DVR capabilities, HD DVR recording capacity is typically around 50 hours for high-definition shows; 400 hours or more for standard-definition.

For a family setting, you need one receiver for each room. So if you have a TV in the family room, bedroom, and kitchen, you would need three receivers. However, some receivers have two tuners, allowing you feed a satellite signal to two televisions using a single receiver. For added convenience, these receivers also include two remotes; one remote operates via radio frequencies, letting you control the receiver from the second room.

television-childrenSince the dawn of television, children have found this an enjoyable and interactive pastime. Visual stimulation is preferred by children in comparison to any other media, and current figures report than children watch an average of four hours of television a day. These figures are much larger than they were almost half a century ago, but changes in lifestyle and technological advances make this inevitable. However, many people question how television is affecting the lives of modern children.

Children`s television programmes began in the 1950s. By 1951 television showed up to 27 hours per week of television programmes aimed at children. The usual time slot was late afternoon and evening with programmes aimed at shorter viewing periods. In the mid 50s the Saturday morning television programme slot was discovered, and since then has long since been kept for children`s viewing. The 1960s saw a switch to animation based television programmes which were cheaper to produce. The lower the cost; the more could be produce and children`s television gained more viewing slots. In the 1970s programmes were made longer to increase viewing figures and in the 80s cable television arrived. This enriched and widened the scope for the provision for children and dedicated television channels were aired.

If you’ve been shopping around for a television set in the recent past, chances are that you’ve been astounded by the wide array of television sets available. I’m not referring to the number of manufacturers. Apart from the brand names most of us have grown up with, most state of the art television sets today come from the Asian region, from companies in China, Korea and Japan. What I am referring to however, is the new technologies that are available. If on the one hand there are still cathode ray tube conventional televisions, on the other hand, there are innovative display systems like liquid crystal display televisions and even what is known as plasma televisions.

In the tried and tested conventional televisions that most of us have grown up with, the technology used is known as the cathode ray tube technology. A cathode gun fires electrons, which, when charged and excited, tend to form an image on a glass screen. These images form as pixels in the three basic colors, which when combined can produce millions of colors. While the technology itself has been fine tuned and developed through the ages to give us great television monitors, there are certain limitations to what the conventional cathode ray tube television can do.
