Living in the United States we are often swept up in the sensationalism that surrounds Hollywood film and the drama of the movie stars that live there. There are amazing films that are being created all over the world which are not widely released in the United States but are enjoyed by millions.  Be sure not to miss out on international films and documentaries.

The Asian film industry is beginning to bloom into a huge section of the international film industry. The most famous type of film that comes out of Korea, Japan and China traditionally has been horror films and martial arts. In recent years movies such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has given light to the dramatic and amazing cinematography that was presented to the world. The main city that produces many of the East Asian films is Hong Kong. Much of the film industry coincides with the pop music and due to the lack of government funding they typically love to make crowd pleasers. So you can be sure to enjoy most of the East Asian movies fully of action and horror.

The biggest film industry outside of Hollywood is the Bollywood films that are coming out of India. Bollywood refers to the Hindi-Language film, which is based in Mumbai, which is where the “Bolly” part of the nickname comes from.  The films are famous for including musical numbers into most of the films and even having English words or sentences within the film. Many of the techniques that are in used within Bollywood are being introduced into Hollywood films as well with films such as Slumdog Millionaire.

Documentaries are the least expensive films to make and due to this the range of where the film originates. Not only is the locale often wide ranging but also the topic of the films which can range from following a spelling-bee competition in spellbound or the latest Oscar wining documentary The cover which follows the annual killing of dolphins off of the coast of Japan. The documentary can be a feel good informational film or something that will get you off the couch and ready to protest.

There are many ways you can access these untapped resources within your own home. Movie rental services like Netflix or Blockbuster. Go online to their international section or their documentary sections and look for the new releases. From there you can pick and choose the newest films and documentary to be sent to your home. This way you can watch the movies on your time and you can read synopsizes of the films before renting them.

Another way to access great independent films and documentaries is getting great television service. Satellite has great channels that show many of the new and old international films and documentary. Channels such as the Sundance Channel show a great selection of International films made by independent studios. Satellite services are great because of the selection of international films and documentaries in high definition. Every channel is shown in HD so whether you are watching a film or a sports game you will get the latest in broadcasting technology.
